Community Programs - Risk Watch Program

Mission Statement

Image: Risk Watch - An Injury Prevention Program from NFPAFPAN administers many different community risk reduction and fire prevention programs throughout the year. To target unintentional injuries, we must first understand that injuries are not "accidents" - they are both predictable and preventable. Educational programs can help people to understand the circumstances under which common injuries occur and enable them to predict and prevent the event.

In the United States, unintentional injuries are the number one cause of death for children 14 years old and under. In the State of Nevada, our unintentional injury rate is more than double the national average in several categories. Since childhood injuries are commonly a direct result of the child's behavior, the Association chose to implement a program that was designed to provide education to school children beginning at a very young age. The NFPA Risk Watch program was chosen to fulfill this goal.

What is Risk Watch?

Risk Watch is a professionally designed curriculum of safety lessons which was co-developed by the Lowe's Home Safety Council and the National Fire Protection Association. It includes modules covering Motor Vehicle Safety, Fire and Burn Prevention, Choking, Suffocation, and Strangulation Prevention, Poisoning Prevention, Trip and Fall Prevention, Firearms Injuries Prevention, Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety, and Water Safety. Risk Watch was written at five different age-appropriate levels for professional educators to use in the classroom.

A bonus to local school teachers is that the Risk Watch curriculum has been professionally correlated to your School District's required benchmarks so that the lessons may be 'plugged right in' as a part of the daily curriculum. Continuous fund-raising efforts by the Association mean that this safety curriculum and training is available to any school teacher free of charge upon request by the school's administrator!

Please select from the links on the left for further information about the Risk Watch program. If you are already a participating school teacher, the
Meetings & Training
, Downloadable RW Forms, and Online Resource Request Forms links are just for you. Also be sure to check out the
Risk Watch Everyday Heroes
link where our own Nevada elementary school children write essays about using Risk Watch lessons in their everyday lives and win prizes for their extra efforts!
