FPAN Members Provide Fire Safety
Information at Las Vegas Safety Fair
|
|
|
From:
Jeff Donahue - President, FPAN
|
 |
|
Details:
For the second year in a row, the Fire
Prevention Association of Nevada was invited
to participate in the Las Vegas Boulevard
Mall Summer Safety Fair.
The Association joined approximately a dozen
other organizations such as the Las Vegas
Metropolitan Police Department, Habitat for
Humanity and Sears, in providing important
safety related information to mall shoppers.
FPAN Vice President Reggie McCollins, Risk
Watch Program Director Sherri Wilcox and
Fireworks Safety Program Director Dennis
Bergquist spoke to and handed out vital
print information to over 2000 people that
took time out from their shopping and
visited the Association booth. The FPAN Team
focused their presentations to summer fire
safety, injury prevention for children, and
due to the closeness of the Fourth of July
holiday, the dangers of fireworks. To the
delight of all the kids that were “forced”
to be at the mall with their parents, each
one received a plastic fire helmet and
Junior Fire Marshal badge that were donated
by the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, Public
Education Division.
Due to the amount of
public contact and the quantity of printed
material that was handed out, the FPAN Team
deemed the participation of FPAN at this
safety fair a major success. The Association
will continue to stay in contact with the
Boulevard Mall management and hope to be
invited to next year's Summer Safety Fair.

|
|
|
Details:
On Saturday, June 2, 2007, FPAN President
Jeff Donahue joined representatives from 19
of the 25 IFMA Chapters, some traveling from
as far away as Washington State and Florida,
in attending the International Fire
Marshal’s Association annual Chapter
Presidents meeting at the National Fire
Protection Association World Safety
Conference in Boston, MA. After each Chapter
representatives reported on their
associations activities for the year, IFMA
President Jon Nisja discussed with the
attendees the direction IFMA was taking in
the war against fire losses. The Chapter
representatives worked with the IFMA
Executive Board in setting some short and
long term goals for the organization.
Attendees took the time to say hello to old
friends and exchange valuable information
regarding the fire issues in their state and
region.
After the meeting, IFMA Executive Director
Steve Sawyer treated the attendees to a
seafood dinner at a Boston landmark
restaurant, the “No Name Restaurant” on the
famous Fish Pier, where everyone enjoyed
dinner, conversations and the Boston
atmosphere.

Residential Fire Sprinklers Receive Unprecedented Support at Building Safety Hearing
|
|
 |
|
|
Intro:
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (May 23, 2007) – At a public hearing held yesterday by the International Code
Council, the organization responsible for publishing the nation’s residential building code, there was an
unprecedented level of support shown for residential fire sprinklers. A proposal to modify the International
Residential Code in favor of fire sprinklers in single-family homes secured the support of well over half of
the voting members present. Only because of a procedural requirement for a super-majority vote of two-thirds,
as opposed to a simple majority, was the sprinkler proposal not adopted. |

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons Kicked Off
Nevada’s
Wildland Fire Awareness Week
|
|
|
From:
Jeff Donahue - President, FPAN
|
 |
|
Details:
On
Friday, May 18th, 2007, Nevada Governor Jim
Gibbons kicked off Nevada’s Wildland Fire
Awareness Week (May19th-25th) with a
proclamation and news conference.
Representatives from several state and
federal agencies, including Fire Prevention
Association President Jeff Donahue, who work
together to combat destructive fires in
Nevada, joined the governor to discuss the
potential for a severe wildland season as
well as the state’s preparedness and ways in
which individual homeowners can protect
their lives and property.
“The
potential for catastrophic wildfires is very
real", Governor Gibbons said. “Last year was
the most devastating fire season in our
state’s history, and this year could be
worse. Wildland Fire Awareness Week is
designed to provide homeowners information
they need to protect themselves and their
homes against wildfires.”
More than 1.3 million acres burned in Nevada
last year. The 2007 fire season is expected
to be similarly destructive. The lack of
snowfall has left a wealth of standing dead
grass, ready to carry fire to larger plants,
all of which are dry.
The Fire Prevention Association has been a
sponsor of Wildland Fire Awareness Week and
the “Living with Fire” Program for the last
two (2) years. After the press conference,
FPAN President Jeff Donahue presented the
governor with his “Honorary Membership”
certificate, membership card and lapel pin. |

Fire Prevention Association of Nevada Team visits Washington,
D.C.
|
|
|
From:
Jeff Donahue - President, FPAN
|
 |
|
Details:
FPAN President Jeff Donahue, along with Association members Michelle Peltier and Meggan VanNess, kicked off the new year with the Home Safety Council "All Ways Fire Safe at Home" Conference in Washington,
D.C. The group took the opportunity to schedule meetings with Nevada Senate and Congressional members to discuss fire safety and injury prevention issues in the State of Nevada.
In meetings with Senator Reid's Senior Policy Advisor Robert Herbert and Nevada Congresswoman Shelly Berkley, important information was exchanged regarding the serious fire safety/injury prevention problem in Nevada and the relatively small amount of Federal grant awards to Nevada public/private agencies.
After reviewing the information provided and listening intently to the Association team, both Senator Reid's office and Congresswoman Berkley committed to looking into this issue and providing assistance to further the Fire Prevention Association of Nevada's mission of providing fire safety and injury prevention programs to the citizens and visitors of Nevada. Senator Reid's office assigned a staff member specializing in grants, to work directly with the Association in obtaining grant awards. The team was also invited to attend the monthly Nevada Congressional Breakfast on Capitol Hill hosted by Senators Reid and Ensign.
On Thursday, January 11, 2007 during the monthly Nevada Congressional breakfast, FPAN President Jeff Donahue presented both Senators
with their Association "Honorary Lifetime Membership" certificates. Congresswoman Berkley was pleased to add her Membership Certificate to the décor of her new office.
The Association Team brought back a tremendous amount of information on fire safety/injury prevention programs that was presented at the conference to include scheduling an upcoming Fire Team USA conference for Nevada. This information is currently being reviewed and disseminated by the Team to the Association Program Directors.
Overall, participating in this event and taking the opportunity to meet with the Nevada elected officials was a major success for the Association' mission and the citizens of the Great State of Nevada.

Giving

|
Details:
At the December 20th membership meeting, hosted by Southwest Gas, members attending brought so many toys to donate to the Marines Toy for Tots Program,
that the table was overflowing.
In addition to the toys, the Executive Board presented a check to Marine Staff Sergeant Fred Krailert for the amount of $1000. Sergeant Krailert stated that the monies donated would be used to purchase toys that cover age groups lacking in donated toys.
It appears that Association members were very busy before the Christmas holiday when it came
to donating toys. It was reported that several members also donated toys to the Southern Nevada Firefighters Burn Foundation's Fill the Fire Truck Program.
Hundreds of local children who would have gone without a present under their tree had a Merry Christmas thanks to the generosity of the members of the Fire Prevention Association of Nevada.

|
Intro:
By invitation; last Thursday, July 6, I had the pleasure of attending a meeting of the State of Nevada Health Division's Bureau of Family Health Services, Injury Prevention Task Force in Reno, NV. This Task Force is a result of the Injury Prevention grant that the Health Division is receiving from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.
After giving a presentation on the Association (special thanks to Risk Watch Program Director Sherri Wilcox and YFS Program Director Kathryn Hooper for the
PowerPoint presentation), the Task Force passed a positive vote in making the Fire Prevention Association of Nevada a member of the Task Force.

SMART CHOICES FOR KIDS:
In our state, 52 of the 68 children under age 14 who died in 2003 died as a result of unintentional injury.
That means that over 76% of those child deaths were preventable.
On May 5, 2006, the DPS, Fire Marshal
Division, teamed with DPS, Office of Traffic Safety, Carson City Fire Dept., Breakthrough Crime Prevention, and World Gym to reach 150 children with messages about fire prevention/safety, bike/pedestrian safety, obeying the law, and choosing to avoid drugs and alcohol.
Students in grades kindergarten through eight at St. Teresa in Carson City learned about making smart choices through activities that included a smoke-filled house simulation and a martial arts demonstration.

CHILD-SET FIRES:
The
DPS, Fire Marshal Division, and the Fire Prevention Association of NV host training courses to help law enforcement, education, judicial, health, and fire personnel prepare for the 101 Critical Days of Summer--between Memorial Day and Labor Day—which is the most intense period when youths set fires!
Course participants learn that they have to depend on each other and look around the community for help. Kids who set fires display many issues of concern shared by multiple agencies—gangs, drugs abuse, neglect,
physical/ sexual abuse, truancy, bullying—the list goes on.
Nevada’s programs recently received national attention on
FOX News, Geraldo at Large.

Intro:
Carson City, NV - The Nevada Department of Public Safety's Fire Marshal Division reminds the public that
fire danger is especially high this year due to the unusual amount of vegetation. Fireworks and other "human factors" have already caused a number of significant fires in all parts of Nevada. Many fires have been close to residential areas and have been attributed to fireworks.

participates in the 2006 Summer Safety Fair
at the Boulevard Mall in Las Vegas

Details:
On Saturday, June 24, 2006, the Fire Prevention Association of Nevada joined several other safety agencies in staffing informational booths at the Summer Safety Fair hosted by the Boulevard Mall in Las Vegas. The Association's booth was staffed by Vice President Reggie McCollins, Risk Watch Program Director Sherri Wilcox, Fireworks Committee Chairman Dennis
Bergquist and Golf Tournament Committee Chairman Greg Crawford.
During the event our four Association volunteers met with the general public promoting Association programs in addition to distributing fire safety handouts and information donated by the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue. The event was covered by the local Las Vegas Fox television station where Risk Watch Program Director Sherri Wilcox was questioned on the importance of the information being presented in this type of safety fair format. Sherri responded to this question by stating that if during the fair these four Association volunteers provided information that saved just one life or prevented one child from being injured, then their time spent at this event was priceless.
Thanks to the Association volunteers for a great job at this event.
Please take the time to view the photos taken at the Safety Fair.
